IC INFORMATION
Character Name: Cidolfus Telamon.
Canon: Final Fantasy 16.
Canon Point: Right before he gives his powers to Clive.
Age: Mid-forties.
Background:
Cid's history begins in Waloed, situation on the continent of Ash. It is said that he had awakened as the dominant of Ramuh and had been granted the rank of Lord Commander within the army of Waloed by the King. It's just that along with lightning powers, the dominant of Ramuh is said to be granted an understanding of how the world works, of how the mothercrystals in the world of Valisthea are absorbing the aether and causing the blight. That, mixed with the fact that the King of Waloed was following the doctrine of a being called Ultima, ended up causing a disagreement ultimately resulting in Cid leaving the army and stowing away to another continent.
(It should be noted that at some points in the story, though not said when, he meets Benedikta and rescues her, taking her to Waloed. When he leaves Waloed he ends up leaving the young woman behind, something Cid often regrets. He also adopts a daughter called Mid and ensures that she goes through education and training in engineering to ensure she has a good life, training that pays off in the later half of the game.)
It would be there he built the Hideaway. In Valisthea those born with the ability to use magic without using crystals would become bearers; they would become slaves. No autonomy or free will allowed, being a bearer would mean becoming someone's object or possession. The Hideaway would become a place that would liberate bearers and those on the same side. It would provide a refuge for people to have a choice in what they did, so that when they died they could be considered free. At the same time Cid would build his reputation, creating a large network of informants and comrades that would assist for many years to come.
Cid finally enters the scene when the dominant of Shiva — Jill — is being moved by the Iron Kingdom. He had the intention of grabbing Jill and in the middle of it all ended up not only finding Jill, but Clive alongside her. Unlike others, Cid instantly recognises Clive for who he is, allowing the young man to come back to the Hideaway with the others. He's intrigued by the talk of another dominant of fire, one that isn't the Phoenix and offers to help Clive where he can as long as the other can help out with a few things as well. Cid proves that not only is he knowledgeable, but adept at fighting with a blade as he ventures out on missions with Clive, using the resources and informants he has at hand to try and find this dominant of fire whilst still rescuing bearers from their plights as they do so.
Things come to a head when it's revealed that Clive is actually the new dominant of fire; Ifrit. Somehow Cid isn't too surprised by it, though he does have to prime into his Ramuh form in order to stop Ifrit from rampaging when the truth is too much for Clive at the time. This brings up many frank and blunt conversations, talks of how Clive can either wallow in self pity or use what he has to help, mentions of how being a dominant and using the abilities is slowly killing Cid, Jill and the other dominants. Slow petrification is not a way Cid wants to go but he still insists on using his abilities when others are in danger.
His most radical and true plan comes to light over time as he reveals the truth about the crystals to Cid and Jill. The crystals that are being used to cast magic are actually absorbing the world's aether, causing a blight that destroys everything in it's path and reducing green and fertile lands to darkness and ash. He wants to destroy the crystals. Clive and Jill agree to help and soon enough the group find themselves at the crystal of Drake's Head in Sanbreque. The crystal's heart proves to be difficult to destroy by conventional means, so Cid opts to prime into his Ramuh form to obliterate it with lightning and does so successfully. It is only then that things truly go to shit; a rupture between realities forms and a burst of light comes from it, impaling Ramuh and knocking Cid to the floor. Clive ends up fighting another creature — Typhon — whilst Jill tends to Cid. Cid knows that it's bad, that he's bleeding out and won't be seeing another morning and the outlaw is ready to call it a day.
Then Ultima arrives, casting Clive under his thrall in an attempt to steal his body away. Cid knows who it is, he's seen enough statues of the being in Waloed, and uses the last of his physical strength to drive a blade through the creature, declaring that Ultima "can't have him". It's by this point things are too much on Cid's body and he manages to light a last smoke up, pass his Ramuh abilities on to Clive before he passes away.
Despite dying, Cid's name and ideals live on through the game as Clive takes up the mantle. The group decide they will continue on destroying the crystals and creating a world Cid would be proud of. Cid posthumously becomes the outlaw he wanted to.
Arrival Scenario: The Free Cities.
Suitability:
Cid is a character who would fit in well with a lot of aspects of the game. Firstly he would want to try and understand which faction is in the right; Cid knows from a war point of view that everyone thinks their side is correct and everyone else is the enemy. Once he understands that the Free Cities are his best bet, he will avoid the military and instead work more with the summoned themselves. He's already heard on the TDM about certain groups and finds them interesting, mirroring what he himself set up back in his own world. Cid is used to taking in outcasts and ensuring they are safe and out of sight, so it would be nothing new to him.
He can also organise and motivate for missions, not to mention go out and complete them. Recruitment is also something he can do; Cid had contacts all over Valisthea, his influence such that when he died Clive was able to take up Cid's name and continue on the work. Cid's name had power and opened doors, and in this new world he'll work to establish something similar. Why not? There's nothing for him to go home to, Cid knows that he has died and understands that chapter has finished for him. It's this place or going back to dying.
Outside of politics he'd be seeing people using magic and not suffering for it so he'd more than likely have a side project of understanding what other people use and to see if there's a way to prevent his own magic from spreading the petrification of his left arm any further. All these worlds worth of people, someone may know something.
Cid is also an amazing engineer, he'll be happy to design and tinker.
His personality will also allow Cid to fit in very well. Roguish with a sarcastic sense of humour and a kindness that supersedes his own well being. He only wishes for a world that treats everyone equally and that everyone can live on their own terms. Even using his powers is normally reserved for when others are in danger, not himself. When lighting his smokes he uses a crystal to do so, rather than his own abilities which some other dominants are seen doing.
Cid is easily disgusting by vast imbalances of power where the system is skewed against obvious underdogs and he'll be very eager to be involved in things that help correct that. Having built the Hideaway and being a Lord Commander also ensures his ability to organise is quite good and he does have an aptitude for leadership too. Cid is easy to trust and will keep secrets until his dying breath too, making him someone easy to talk to. If they can get past the teasing and occasional joke.
Powers:
Cid's powers come from the fact he is the dominant of the eikon Ramuh. This means his powers are lightning based. He can either use his skills in his normal, human form, or he can change into two states; semi-primed and fully primed. Semi-primed means his skills and empowered, he will have an otherworldly hue to his appearance, lightning will course around him and his veins will also appear to be electrified.
Being fully primed means turning fully into Ramuh, a large elder being with a vast beard, robes and a staff. Just like other primed eikons, Ramuh is large and will need a lot of space to be able to move freely. Here he is still Cid, and the skill set is even more powerful and enables him to use Judgement Bolt. These come with their own limitations. Using their powers will slowly turn the dominant to stone. The lesser powers are fine, but turning into the eikon Ramuh will cause it to spread from Cid's already damaged left arm. He has already been seen coughing up blood occasionally too and often gets scolded for priming by the Hideaway's medic Tarja. He will not be turning into Ramuh unless he really has to.
Skills:
Pile Drive: Drives his staff into the ground, electrifying all enemies within a radius of the strike. Can knock them off balance and does moderate damage.
Thunderstorm: Calls forth a powerful thunderstorm that rains multiple bolts of lightning down upon a target for a few seconds.
Lightning Rod: Creates a ball of lightning that, upon being struck, chains lightning to other nearby enemies. Lasts a few minutes.
Judgement Bolt (Ramuh only): Summon from the heavens a mighty levinbolt that deals massive damage to a single target.
Ramuh aside, Cid is adept with a blade and was previously military trained as Lord Commander. His skils as an engineer are also amazing as evidenced by being half responsible for the design of the Enterprise.
PERSONALITY QUESTIONS
Describe an important event in your character's life and how it impacted them.
Becoming the dominant of Ramuh could be considered THE important event in Cid's life, the one that got the ball rolling so to speak. Being the dominant of Ramuh means being granted an understand of the world and how the crystals impacted it. It gives Cid the knowledge and ability to be able to leave Waloed and begin work not only on how to save the world, but to build a better place for bearers in the meantime. Had this not happened there are high chances that Cid would have stayed in Waloed with Barnabas and Benedikta, ending up either killed by Mythos for standing in the way, or being killed by Mythos in order to give his power over as was the will of Ultima.
Being able to leave Waloed and have the strength to fight battles also ensured Cid is able to build a following as well as a Hideaway, and in being a dominant also allows him to understand some of the problems Clive and Jill face, ensuring he can connect with them and assist with them making the decision to go or stay.
Cid often refers to Ramuh with a disparaging way of talking, or dry sarcasm, and he can't be blamed for that. He calls it a haunting, being "haunted by the old man" as in the end using the powers he's been granted will kill him in the end. Cid also often wonders why Ramuh chose him instead of any of the younger, fitter people that had been around at the time, though he also accepts that it happened and gets on with it.
Does your character have a moral code, or other set of standards they try to live by?
Cid is a huge believer in choice and equality. A lot of what he does and what drives him revolves around the bearers who are basically a slave class in Valisthea. He wants to create a place where people can die on their own terms, free from being bound to however they were born, their stations or their status as a bearer. This is something he can help with in the now and is one of Cid's main ways of working, whereas the destruction of the mothercrystals is something more radical. He even knows that doing the latter will change the world and that as it stood, the world wasn't "ready" for such a big change.
He treats everyone with a fairness no matter if they are bearer or not, though enemies don't get that same kindness. All bearers that are rescued are taken in and made sure they are settled and supported as they adjust, a testament to Cid's own standards that all are treated right in the Hideaway. Seeing others being treated unfairly due to systematic imbalances and such are enough to have Cid ready to throw down or at least plot someone's downfall.
What quality or qualities do they admire most?
There are many qualities that Cid admires the most, ones that tie in to his own beliefs and motivations. Conviction, equality, fairness are three of the biggest qualities that will have Cid more than happy with how things are going. They are the three things he strives for and tries to create within the Hideaway. Once the crystals are destroyed the world will hopefully become equal, even if it does take time. Doing such a thing is also daunting and not for the faint of heart, so conviction and determination are certainly required. The world will be saved, but the class systems will be thrown so out of balance and magic will essentially vanish meaning ways of life will become more difficult. Conviction is always helpful, but not something everyone has. Anyone who can carry a flag for their own ideals no matter how difficult it can become is admirable in many ways.
Being an outlaw is inherently amusing to Cid, he laughs over the idea of becoming one and so any self-proclaimed outlaws he meets will also be a little admired. Though mostly teased.
Do they have a part of themselves they dislike?
Cid dislikes the part of him that left Benedikta behind when he fled Waloed, it's something he often things over and regrets. Benedikta had been someone he had saved and taken with him to Waloed, she was smart and shrewd, enough that she rose to the ranks until becoming Leader of Covert Ops. When leaving Waloed, Cid had been unable to convince Benedikta to come with him and ultimately had to leave her behind with a mad King.
Benedikta is the one Cid could not save.
The rest he has made his peace with, knowing that the things he does involves killing the enemy and destroying some things. But it's all in the grand scheme of things and if he stayed up all night worrying over them he'd never sleep again.
What is their sign, and why?
Cid's arcana would be Judgement. Not only was he in the military, but he is definitely a part of the charismatic kind that plays amazingly to other people. He is a good leader with ideals so great that others decided to take them on once Cid was no longer able to.
Whilst Cid would fit amazingly as the Emperor arcana he understands his nose isn't clean. The outlaw wants to do good but in doing so could harm the ways of living for many for a long time. It's not the most responsible want for the world in the short-term but he'll shoulder it anyway. His way of saving the world will hurt a lot of people and Cid also knows that sometimes you have to kill a few to save many.
